Commercial Writing

CW 227-428 Writing Seminar (1 each) Prereq.: EN 301. In this elective course, students will be introduced to a new topic every semester. Topics considered will be nonfiction narrative writing, profile writing, writing for children, persuasive writing, and short story writing. The instructor will present good published literature for each category; students will write and share papers every other week. Each student will submit a portfolio of writing for evaluation at the end of each semester.

CW 301 Copy Writing (3) Prereq.: EN 102. This course teaches how to write advertisements for print media. Projects include magazine and newspaper ads, billboards, and direct mail letters. Students also learn creative strategy, philosophical aspects of advertising, and basic principles behind radio and television advertising. This course may be taken as an English elective by English major, minor, or teaching field, or by commercial writing broad field.

CW 302 Copy Editing (3) Prereq.: EN 360. Students will learn how to edit their own writing and the writing of others by applying editing principles taught in this class. This course may be taken as an English elective by English major, minor, or teaching field, or by commercial writing broad field. Fall sem.

CW 304 Copy Editing II (3) Prereq.: CW 302. This course builds on the principles learned in CW 302. The students receive practical experience through the editing and publishing of a literary magazine. This course may be taken as an English elective by English major, minor, or teaching field. Spring sem.

CW 305 Technical Writing (3) Prereq.: EN 102; CS 101, sophomore computer science concentration or permission of the Registrar. This course teaches the student how to do technical writing for any field in which such writing is required. The students learn how and where to find information; how to write proposals, memorandums, recommendations, short reports, and instruction manuals; and how to work with graphics. Spring sem.

CW 325 Writing for Publication (3) Prereq.: EN 301 and junior or senior. This course teaches students the skills necessary for freelance writing. Students will learn to refine articles, find markets, compose query letters, write book proposals, prepare manuscripts, and deal with finances. Spring sem.

CW 406 Professional Writing (3) Prereq.: CW 302, EN 325, 401, and graduating senior. The student will develop advanced writing skills in journalism, literary nonfiction, editorial and opinion writing, and essay composition. Emphasis will be placed on polishing writing skills. Fall sem.

CW 421 Commercial Writing Portfolio Exhibit (3) Prereq.: CW 302, 305, EN 301, and senior commercial writing concentration. In this course students prepare a professional-quality commercial writing production.

CW 422 Commercial Writing Practicum (3) Prereq.: CW 302, 305, EN 301, and senior commercial writing concentration. Students obtain actual field experience in the area of commercial writing.
