Dramatic Production

DP 116–416 Drama Workshop (1 each) Prereq.: Participation in the cast of the nonmusical Thanksgiving or commencement production. Students develop individual roles while learning to interact in the theatrical environment. Coursework culminates in a public performance.

DP 303 Costuming and Makeup (2) Prereq.: SP 102. This course surveys the history of costume from the Egyptian to the modern period and gives basic practical tips on how to costume a play. The student also learns the basic principles and application techniques of makeup for the stage. Students design costumes for a play and participate in supervised labs designed to help each student learn to apply stage makeup correctly. Spring sem.

DP 304 Fundamentals of Acting (3) Prereq.: SP 102 and SP 241. This foundational course studies the basic theory and techniques of realistic acting. While performing a variety of acting scenes, students learn and apply script and character analysis. Rehearsal techniques and improvisational exercises are also studied and performed.

DP 307 Introduction to Dramatic Production (3) Prereq.: Speech communications education major or speech communications concentration, DP 299 or SP 299, and credit for or concurrent enrollment in AR 418 and DP 304; or speech minor, second teaching field, or broad field, DP 298 or SP 298, and credit for or concurrent enrollment in DP 304. A concentrated study of the theory, methods, and techniques of stage directing is presented. Students exercise practical application of dramatic principles through the production of a short play in the Experimental Theater.

DP 308 Fundamentals of Dramatic Production (3) Prereq.: DP 307. The technical aspects of mounting a stage production form the basis of material presented in this course. It provides a platform for dramatic production techniques in staging, lighting, costuming, makeup, and sound. The course supplements the material presented in SP 307. As the final class project, students produce a full-length play in the Experimental Theater.

DP 309 Dramatic Production Practicum (3) Prereq.: DP 308. This course is designed for the student who desires additional training in dramatic production techniques. Also a brief section on theater history will be studied. Students complete individual coaching projects and an independent production study covering all areas of production such as directing, designing, and lighting.

DP 314 Assemblies and Productions Practicum (2) Prereq.: SP 102. This course presents principles and provides experiences in directing programs for Christian ministries. Students complete the directing process from choosing appropriate selections to public performance.

DP 331–332 Private Lessons in Productions (1 each) Prereq. for DP 331: DP 298 or 299; and credit for or concurrent enrollment in SP 203. The student receives personalized instruction in dramatic productions.

DP 345–446 Production Practicum (1 each) Prereq. for DP 345: DP 298 or 299 or SP 298 or 299; Prereq. for others is previous course. This course gives the student practical experience in various production venues. The student completes a minimum of 28 hours of production work under the direction of skilled production personnel.

DP 418 Scenic Design (2) This course introduces the materials and construction techniques of scenic properties for one- and two-act plays. Students research, design and construct a scale model set. This course may be taken as a speech elective. Meets 4 hours a week.

DP 436 Speech Education Production (1) Prereq.: SP 204 and senior speech communications education major The recital represents the culmination of the student’s interpretation and production training. Students produce the stage performance of the program compiled in SP 331–332.
