Music Education Major

Bachelor of Science Degree

French Horn lessons

The music education major receives “how-to” instruction and “hands-on” experience in a variety of musical areas. He is equipped to teach high school students to use their talents and performance skills to glorify God and communicate to others. All music education majors receive beginning training in voice, strings, brass, percussion, and woodwind instruments and training to at least a secondary proficiency in piano.

Major Proficiency: Students must demonstrate sufficient talent and ability to pursue music courses. They must demonstrate superior ability via placement test, platform, and recital in one area of applied music and take instruction in this field every semester. This major proficiency may be voice, piano, organ, or one of the standard band or orchestral instruments. While natural gifts of voice and musicianship are expected, previous voice training is not required of students with a voice proficiency. Students who take organ lessons must have at least three years of piano background.

Music Repertoire: Students with a major or second teaching field in music education are required to enroll in Music Repertoire each semester they are enrolled in a one-hour or one-half-hour lesson, after they pass their sophomore music platform.

Piano Secondary Proficiency Examination: Students whose major proficiency is voice or instrument must have a secondary proficiency in piano and must pass the piano secondary proficiency examination. Organists must pass the piano secondary proficiency examination before graduation.

Platform Evaluation and Recitals: During second semester, sophomore year, the student must successfully complete MU 297 Sophomore Music Education Major Platform to be approved for a major in music education. A public recital is given during the senior year. Students must complete the application procedures for a senior recital with Coordinator of PCC Productions by the appointed deadline.

Ensemble Participation: All music education majors must participate in one performing ensemble every semester. Performing ensembles available are College Choir, Symphonic Choir, Chamber Ensemble, Madrigal Singers, Ladies’ Chorus, Symphonic Band, Orchestra, Handbell Choir, and Joy or Praise Singers (traveling ensembles). Students with instrumental proficiency are required to be in Orchestra each semester. Students with a piano or voice proficiency may count up to 4 credits of Joy or Praise Singers. Piano proficiencies may count up to four semesters of Accompaniment Practicum, Handbell Choir, and/or Piano Tuning and Repair for ensemble credits.

Accompaniment Practicum: Students receiving music instruction in piano, organ, or hymnplaying are required to do a limited amount of accompanying for vocal or instrumental lessons. One credit of Accompaniment Practicum may be earned if a student accompanies at least two hours per week in any given semester.

Second Teaching Field Requirement: Each music education program is shown with Bible as the second teaching field. However, music education majors may complete a different second teaching field. If a field other than Bible is chosen, an SE 300-level methods course in that field is required, BI 414 Revelation would no longer be required, and BI/BB Bible or Bible Background electives may replace BI 321 and 322 Bible Doctrines in the junior year.

Academic Program Fee: $40 per semester or $10 per payment. Students taking music lessons and group instruction pay appropriate music course fees.

Second Teaching Field: Music. Students must demonstrate superior ability via placement test and platform in one area of applied music and will take instruction in this area for six semesters. See Music Repertoire requirements. MU 298 Sophomore Music Minor Platform must be completed to be approved for a second teaching field in music. Students with a music proficiency in voice or instrument must participate in a performing ensemble two semesters sometime during sophomore, junior, or senior years.
