Graduate Studies
The purpose of this degree is to prepare graduate students to create God-honoring visual concepts which reflect a distinctively individual artistic style.
Objectives: Graduates of this program will be able to
- create a body of work that displays technical proficiency in specific mediums of choice;
- create a body of work that promotes God-honoring themes and to apply a biblical worldview to the visual arts in conceptual development, design philosophy, and traditional, representational methodology;
- create artistic works that are effective and clear in their communication;
- exhibit a familiarity of the working methods and knowledge of other recognized master artists through personal research;
- demonstrate an ability to analyze and critique the strengths and weaknesses of any artistic form, method, or completed work.
Study at this level challenges students to become competent artists by expanding their comprehension of the field of art from a biblical worldview. The program allows students to pursue their artistic interests in the studio, outdoors on location, three-dimensionally and digitally.
Residence Requirements
Fall, Spring, Post-Term, Fall, and Spring: Twenty-one months of residence work beginning with fall semester is required. A public show must be given before graduate work is completed.
Progress Evaluation
Students in the art program must realize that continuation in the art program is dependent upon an ongoing evaluation of the student’s art abilities. A student may be removed at any time from the art program if in the opinion of the faculty/administration the student fails to perform satisfactorily or improve sufficiently in the appropriate art skills, regardless of the student’s academic average in the program. Students receiving a “C” or lower in any studio course may be required to repeat that course. A student cannot repeat a studio course more than one time.
Upon failure of a second studio course, the Graduate Committee reviews the student’s status to determine if he can continue in the art program.
