Secondary Education Subject Areas [M.S.]

The English, history, mathematics, and science education programs in secondary subject areas provide advanced training in these subject areas in addition to training in education.

Residence Requirements

A minimum of 30 semester credit hours of work is required. English, history, and science may be completed on a two-summer schedule. English, history, and mathematics education may be completed as follows:

Fall/Spring/Summer/Fall/Spring: A minimum of 21 months of residence work beginning with August Preterm is required, including the graduate research project.

Distance Learning: Up to one third of course requirements may be completed through PCC’s distance-learning program with the remainder completed on campus.

Summer Program of Study

The student enrolls in three subject content courses that span sessions I, II, and III and in one education course during both sessions IV and V. The graduate student must take the courses in the sequence recommended by the College to complete all the course work in two summers.

Admission Requirements

See General Admission Requirements. Graduate applicants in secondary education subject areas are not required to have majored in education on the undergraduate level. However, applicants need at least 18 semester credits of English, history, mathematics, or science on the undergraduate level according to the desired program. English credits should include content in both American and English literature. English education program also requires an entrance examination in English grammar. Mathematics credits should include calculus II. Science credits should include a general chemistry course and a physics course.
