PW 301 Copywriting (3) Offered Fall, Spring. Prereq.: EN 126 and sophomore or above. This course teaches how to write advertisements for print and digital media. Students will learn creative strategy, the motivating sequence, and philosophical aspects of advertising. This course may be taken as an English elective by English minor. Required for MK 402.
PW 305 Technical Writing (3) Offered Spring. Prereq.: CS 101, EN 126, and sophomore or above. This course focuses on the style of writing used in technical, non-creative fields. The student will learn to craft a variety of technical communications, including the use of effective graphics and design. Required for PW 421, 422.
PW 325 Journalism I (3) Offered Fall. Prereq.: EN 126 and sophomore or above. Students will learn a practical introduction to journalism, focusing on the basics of news writing. Students will write several basic news stories using facts gathered through research and interviews. This course may be taken as an English elective by English minor. Required for PW 326, 406.
PW 326 Journalism II (3) Offered Spring. Prereq.: PW 325. Students will learn advanced reporting techniques using public records and development of news sources to write a variety of news stories. This course may be taken as an English elective by English minor.
PW 331 Poetry Writing (3) Offered Spring. Prereq.: EN 301. Students will analyze works of established poets and will learn to write poetry using various techniques and forms.
PW 404 Advanced Copy Editing (3) Offered Spring. Prereq.: EN 302 and 401. This course builds on the principles learned in EN 302. The students receive practical experience through the editing and publishing of a literary magazine. This course may be taken as an English elective by English minor.
PW 406 Creative Nonfiction (3) Offered Fall. Prereq.: EN 302, 401, PW 325, and graduating senior. The student will develop advanced writing skills in journalism, literary nonfiction, editorial and opinion writing, and essay composition. Emphasis will be placed on polishing writing skills.
PW 408 Writing for Publication (3) Offered Spring. Prereq.: EN 301 and junior or senior. This course teaches students the skills necessary for freelance writing, including dealing with finances and setting writing goals. Students will learn to sell articles and manuscripts and find markets as well as properly compose book proposals.
PW 421 Professional Writing Portfolio Exhibit (3) Offered Fall, Spring. Prereq.: EN 301, 302, PW 305, and senior professional writing concentration. Students prepare a professional-quality portfolio.
PW 422 Professional Writing Internship (2) Offered Both sem., Interterm, and Summer. Prereq.: EN 301, 302, PW 305, senior professional writing concentration, and approval from chair of humanities. Students obtain actual field experience in the area of professional writing.
