EN 611 Graduate English Research Project (3) Offered online: Summer even. Prereq.: EN 601. Under the supervision of advisory faculty, the student will complete a thorough, original research project.
EN 613 Approaches to Literature (3) Offered on campus: Spring, Summer; online: Spring. Students study various approaches to literature from Classical to Contemporary thought and develop literary analysis skills by applying these approaches to literary texts.
EN 620 History of the English Language (3) Offered on campus: Fall odd, Summer odd; online: Fall odd, Summer even. Students learn English sounds, word constructions, sentence structures, and word meanings in a developmental and historical context so that they may more readily teach the phonology, morphology, and syntax of English. Students examine the progress of the English language from old English to modern English.
EN 630 Structural Concepts in Written Communication (3) Offered on campus and online: Spring odd, Summer even. Competency: English Grammar and Composition. This course is designed to prepare students to effectively teach grammar and composition. Students will analyze the English language according to its syntax, usage, and parts of speech and will evaluate strategies for teaching grammar and composition in light of a traditional philosophy of education.
EN 650 Studies in American Literature (3) Offered on campus: Fall even, Summer even; online: Fall even, Summer odd. Competency: American Literature. Representative works from major authors are studied for meaning and appreciation. In addition to learning the basic history of American literature, the student will learn how to identify literary themes and interpret literature from a traditional Christian perspective. Students will demonstrate interpretive and analytical skills in a class paper.
EN 660 Studies in British Literature (3) Offered on campus and online: Spring even, Summer odd. Competency: British Literature. Representative works from major authors are examined for meaning and appreciation. In addition to learning the basic history of British literature, the student will learn how to identify literary themes and interpret literature from a traditional Christian perspective.
EN 670 Literature Seminar (3) Offered on campus: Fall; online: Fall even, Spring even. The student will study and interpret representative literary works.
EN 700 Independent Study (3) Prereq.: ED 726 or 728. This course is a 15-week independent academic research study. Students submit a one-page project proposal explaining the specific research question and listing a minimum of 15 preliminary sources for approval by the instructor of record. Research will result in a 25- to 30-page research paper and a multimedia presentation.
