Fill the Need for Christians in Science

The need for Christians in science increases every year, as choices concerning health, environmental, and ethical standards all rest upon scientists’ philosophy of life and its origin. Combining rigorous study and biblical principles, the biology concentration at PCC prepares students to further the field while defending their faith.

PCC’s program introduces students to biological systems and processes, providing them knowledge of biology at environmental, cellular, and molecular levels. These topics are amplified and applied in the laboratory. Biology fuels students with an understanding of living organisms so that they can use their knowledge to discover even more about God’s creation. Therefore, students receive thorough instruction in the study of life and living organisms, including their structure, growth, origin, distribution, and taxonomy.

Because biology is a natural science, those considering the program are encouraged to have a background in mathematics and chemistry. Students completing the biology concentration are thoroughly prepared to begin a career in biology or to further their education with advanced degrees. Zoologists, plant biologists, ecologists, veterinarians, lab technicians/researchers, and many other professionals choose to begin their studies in biology, making it a viable degree option.

The purpose of the biology concentration is for the student to learn to apply both scriptural and scientific methods toward understanding how living things function and how they depend upon each other for sustenance. The accomplishment of this dual goal encompasses biblical concepts about the relationships between God, man, and the physical universe. The scientific method is used to observe and explore the variety and design of God’s creation.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the biology concentration will be able to

  • demonstrate their understanding of key concepts necessary to solve problems in science and mathematics or explain life processes,
  • apply standard scientific conventions to present logical conclusions based on novel research data and the research of others,
  • critique creationist and evolutionary interpretations of scientific data by applying scientific principles from the perspective of a supernatural creation of all things in six literal days approximately 6,000 years ago by the God of the Bible,
  • articulate ethical standards based on a biblical foundation, and
  • demonstrate skills in properly collecting and analyzing data obtained by using standard biology laboratory techniques and instrumentation.

High School Preparation

Recommended high school preparation for a biology concentration is 2 units of algebra and 1 unit each of biology and chemistry. Opportunities are available to make up certain deficiencies. In this case, time required to complete a biology concentration could be expected to increase.

  • Education

One of the most important components of college life is academics. Over the past four years, God has used PCC’s high academic standard to stretch me. Each semester brought challenging biology classes that delved deeper into the scientific complexity of God’s creation, maturing my knowledge to a level that is essential for future success. However, it is not only the great amount of information but also the important moral and spiritual lessons brought about by every class that characterized and strengthened my education. I am confident that I have received a solid and well-rounded education that will serve as a firm foundation as I go on to further schooling in the medical field.
